No fancy smancy picture this time of a stack of Spam Musibi. I couldn't keep them on the plate!
For those of you that don't know what Spam Musubi is, you fry slices of Spam in a mixture of Soy Sauce and sugar. We used Yoshida's with some sugar added. Then lay out a slice of Nori (seaweed) and place the Musubi mold (you can see it in the right of the next photo) on top of it and pack with a thin layer of sticky rice. Slap in a slice of the cooked Spam and another layer of rice and press firmly with the top of the mold, pushing the mixture out of the mold. Wrap the Nori around it and you are ready for a tasty snack. Or, a whole meal if you do two cans of Spam and you and London are pretty much the only ones eating it...Eric and Kailin each had one.
We used Garlic flavored Spam and Low Sodium Spam for the two batches. We were STUFFED!
Saturday morning
Got a slow start this morning and had planned on going to Waimea Canyon today. Eric wanted to do some cleanup around the house so he got his new hose out and watered the lawn. We loaded up the cardboard from the trampoline and some other stuff that wouldn't fit in the garbage cans to take to the dump. They had a small carpet rolled up by the side of the house that he wanted to throw away. I offered to help pick it up but asked if there were going to be any critters in it. Eric said there might be geckos and picked it up and shook it. A lizard fell out, landed on his foot, jumped to his other foot, and started scurrying up his leg! It freaked out, Eric freaked out, I cracked up! I wish I would have had my camera ready.
I spent a little time putting together a paper plane launcher that I picked up at the store. Got it put together and tried it out. It needed some tweaking so I got bored and moved on to other things.
Loaded up the car and were getting ready to go with me driving. Stepped on the brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor...
Eric crawled under the car and thought he saw where brake fluid was leaking out so he got the jack and removed the wheel.
We didn't find any leaks, so we added brake fluid and the brakes worked fine...well, at least as good as they did before.
Went to the dump and took care of some other stuff around the house.
Lori and Eric wanted to go to a couple of yard sales, so I went with them.
One house had plants all over the front yard.
Decorated nicely for Christmas!
This yard was decorated a bit differently.
Not sure why they have this jeep laying on its side.
But at least they put an oil pan "under" the engine.
Saw another Jeep. Not sure which one I would consider being in better condition.
RUST NEVER SLEEPS!
Spotted and old Opel GT. Cool cars in their time, but this one has seen better days.
Saw this house and we all just had to ask...
How in the heck did that get on the roof???
Back to the house and Kailin was playing with her new makeup kit.
Guess which one has lipstick on.
We decided to scrap our plan to go to Waimea Canyon since the road is steep and winding. None of us wanted to take a chance with the brakes on the car.
Sooo, we went to town...again.
This time our plan was to go out to dinner at a sushi place that Lori and Eric recommended.
Of course we had to stop at Costco...and Ace hardware.
While we were at Costco, Lori and Lois went in to get something and Eric and the kids and I hung out by the car. Eric and I had sat back down in the front seats and Kailin started screaming. She had closed the back hatch on her fingers! We got the door open and checked her fingers, both Eric and I thought the worst, but she had gotten them between the rubber seal and the top of the door. Just enough gap and cushion to only scare her. Whewww, could have been a bad one!
On to Ace hardware.
Some pretty funky plant fertilizer.
I hadn't even noticed the prices on these until I looked at the pictures later.
Cha Ching is right! $35 for a pound ?
We went to Sushi Bushido for dinner in Kapaa.
Not much of a crowd when we got there, but it filled up shortly afterwards.
You can sit at the bar and watch the Sushi chef make the dishes.
You can also watch him on the TV above the bar!
Nanee and Popee
Nanee and London
Eric, Lori, and Kailin
And London!
I had the Michiko Roll
Salmon, shrimp, tuna, avocado, and cucumber, topped with unagi and spicy aioli, baked, drizzled with sweet unagi garlic sauce and topped with bonito flakes
Lois had the Crackling Shrimp
Shrimp tempura, avocado, lettuce, and cucumber, rolled in panko with sake aioli.
Eric had the Wai’ale’ale Roll
Unagi, yellow tail, sweet egg omelet, and avocado, mixed and baked in an unagi aioli. Rolled a unique way with cream cheese
Lori had the Ali'i Roll (I didn't want to be rude and lean all the way to the other corner of the table to take a picture)
Baked lobster topping crab, asparagus, and avocado rolled in fried tempura batter with wasabi garlic butter and a sweet garlic unagi sauce.
We also ordered a Coconut Wireless Roll
Tempura shrimp, bacon, and avocado, topped with cream cheese, dried unsweet coconut, and a rum sake molasses sauce.
And another one that I couldn't find on the menu.
We all shared so that everyone could taste each one. They were ALL delicious!!!
As if that wasn't enough food, we ordered two Hana Hou's for desert.
Ice cream wrapped with pound cake, rolled in panko, deep fried, and dusted with powdered sugar.
Ice cream wrapped with pound cake, rolled in panko, deep fried, and dusted with powdered sugar.
All of Popee's favorites...well, some bacon would have been nice.
However, we did get some bacon on the the Coconut Wireless Roll (above).
Hana Hou no MOU!
Kailin is just Too Cool For School!
London is a different story altogether.
Nanee outside Sushi Bushido.
The kids wanted to wander around the stairs.
Musician play right outside the restaurant.
We wandered the streets for a bit to settle the food before the drive home. There were shops open and vendors hawking goods on the sidewalk.
And, a lifted truck done right!
A small patch of grass in the sidewalk? Why?
I noticed later that there are trees planted in the sidewalk in patches like this. This one must have been removed.
I saw a group of people on bicycles coming down the street. Some of them were decorated with lights, but this is the only picture that turned out. Seems my camera couldn't figure out what to focus on with the others!
Shaka!
And a good time was had by all!
